Marcy Doderer, ACH's new CEO, will help the hospital create possibility for more children. She brings valuable experience as a hospital administrator and a parent of a child with special health care needs.
After graduating from Central High School in Little Rock, Marcella “Marcy” Doderer moved to Texas, Iowa and then back to Texas to continue her education.
After graduating with a master of arts in hospital and health administration, she began working at a hospital in Dallas, where she would spend the next seven years.
In 2001, she was named vice president at the CHRISTUS Health System, where she rose through the ranks, eventually being named top administrator of the CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.
Doderer understands pediatric health care not only from an administrator’s perspective, but also as a parent.
When her younger daughter Katherine was born, she was diagnosed with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome. That means her brain doesn’t recognize the signals to breathe on its own.
“Though being a mom of a child with special health care needs has its challenges, it has absolutely made me a better health care leader,” she says. “I have used my own experiences as a mom in shaping policies and practices that are more patient-and family-centered."
“I find it invaluable to know first-hand what it’s like to spend the night in the PICU or wait for hours in the surgery waiting room,” Doderer says.
“Arkansas Children’s Hospital is such a strong institution,” she says. “The hospital not only provides great care, but staff members work tirelessly to keep Arkansans healthier, to prevent them from ever needing the hospital’s services. That’s a very important mission.”
As the hospital looks to its next century of service, generous donors and community partners will play an increasingly important role.
“Inherent to a successful children’s hospital is a strong foundation with great relationships between community partners and donors,” says Doderer. “I know philanthropy has always played an important role at ACH and it will become even more important as we work to make Arkansas one of the healthiest places for children and families.”
“Marcy will be a wonderful leader for Arkansas Children’s Hospital,” says Tom Baxter, chair of the ACH board. “She is skilled, warm, open and ready to listen and learn. We are thrilled to have her coming home to Arkansas.”
