Meet Cassidy Freeman

Moving from Oklahoma to Arkansas in 2014, Tracy knew that her daughter, Cassidy, was apprehensive about changing to a new home and a new school. Cassidy’s juvenile arthritis made Tracy anxious, too. She wondered if she would find a new team of pediatric doctors and nurses that would be able to help her daughter.

At the age of 4, Cassidy could not get out bed in the morning. Her knees and big toe were swollen and kept her from moving pain free. After visits with three pediatricians, Cassidy’s case went unsolved. Then, at her well-child appointment, Cassidy’s pediatrician diagnosed her with juvenile arthritis.

“The complications and nuances of Cassidy’s disease made us nervous,” says Tracy.  “But our fears were quickly minimized.  From the beginning, we received thorough, intelligent and excellent care from Arkansas Children’s.  The doctors, nurses and assistants are all top notch.  I’m proud to say I am a part of the ACH community and I’m even more grateful for the care provided to my daughter.”

Thanks to donors like you, Cassidy receives the care she needs to feel better. Now a teenager, Cassidy visits Arkansas Children’s Rheumatology Clinic, Sleep Medicine Clinic, Radiology Clinic and a host of others.

Tracy and Cassidy love Dr. Sukesh Sukumaran and appreciate, “his whole-person approach to treating my daughter,” says Tracy. “Dr. Sukumaran doesn’t just prescribe meds and move on. He is very conscientious of her mental health and whole body health (weight, depression, headaches, etc.)  I also appreciate that he is happy to discuss other forms of treatment besides medication such as yoga, water aerobics, acupuncture and diet changes.”

Today, Cassidy has very few limitations. “She is a gregarious, positive and outspoken person,” says Tracy. “At this point, she’s interested in mental health and becoming a therapist.  Advocacy is and will remain a large part of her life.  She wants to be a voice for those who are unable or afraid to speak up for themselves.”
