Tyler Morgan, heart defects

Tyler Morgan Arkansas Childrens Hospital

Jonesboro, 17 years old

Tyler Morgan was born in October 1995 with heart defects and was airlifted by Angel One to Arkansas Children’s Hospital when he was just a few hours old.

His heart defects were vast and included the transposition of the great arteries, pulmonary stenosis and a ventricular septal defect.

In other words, the two main arteries going out of his heart were switched, he had a heart valve disorder and a hole in his heart.

Tyler’s first treatment was cardiac catheterization, a medical procedure used to diagnose some heart conditions.

He had his first open-heart surgery when he was 3-months-old. His pulmonary artery was replaced with an artificial artery that will not grow with him.

Since that first surgery, he has undergone four more open-heart operations to replace the artificial artery, the last one in March 2012. He will continue to have heart surgeries for the rest of his life.

“We have always been treated like family at ACH,” his mother, Jennifer, says. “The staff at Children’s – from the doctors all the way to the janitors – has always gone above and beyond for us.”

Though Tyler also has seen pulmonologists, endocrinologists, dentists and plastic surgeons at ACH, most of his experience is with heart surgeons and staff.

His mother says she really appreciates that the nurses would update the family hourly during Tyler’s surgeries.

“Although Tyler has had a rough life, this is what has made him who he is,” Jennifer says. “Tyler is patient, kind, loving and caring. He wants to do what is right for everyone”

Tyler enjoys going to church, his two dogs Penny and Athena, singing, making movies and all Apple products.

“I could talk for days about ACH and how they saved my child’s life many times,” Jennifer says.
